You can buy one per round, and only during the planning phase. Most of them last a single round.
What you get depends on which of the seven kinds it is: Champion, Combat, Item, Shop, Gold/XP, Misc, or a Risky deal.
By default one turns up in every other shop. After stage 5, every other Wisp you see is guaranteed to be a Combat one.
The Blossom trait is built around them:
- It upgrades the Wisps you are offered.
- It puts them in more shops.
- It pays you gold for buying one.
- Eventually it lets you buy two a round.
Note: Skipping a Wisp costs you nothing. When planning ends, the Wisp is whisked away and the champion it was covering is revealed. So you still see that extra unit in the slot.

Frequently asked questions
-
What exactly is a Wisp, and what can one give me?
A Wisp is a temporary, single-use buy in the rightmost shop slot. It is not a champion. A real champion hides behind it. You can only buy it during the planning phase.
Its kind tells you what it gives:
- A champion or an item.
- Combat power for a fight.
- Shop help.
- Gold or XP.
- A misc effect.
- A risky deal.
You may buy one per round. A trait line raises that cap.
Note: Each kind has its own colour and icon, so you read it at a glance.
-
Why does a Wisp cover a shop slot, and is it worth buying a cheap one just to open that slot during a roll-down?
It is by design. The Wisp sits on top of a real shop champion. Riot built it so you still see one more unit in that slot.
When the planning phase ends, the Wisp leaves and the champion shows. That happens whether you bought the Wisp or not.
- Without help, a Wisp covers the slot in every other shop.
- A trait line covers it in every shop.
Note: Buy a Wisp for its effect. The hidden champion shows when planning ends anyway.
-
How long does a Wisp last? Is it gone after one round?
Most last a single round. Combat Wisps power up the next fight.
Some kinds hand you something that stays:
- Gold.
- XP.
- Champions you keep.
- Consumables that give a permanent stat.
- A champion you own that permanently turns into a higher-cost one.
Some Wisps only lend a unit, item or potion. Those leave after the fight.
Note: Read the Wisp text for "temporary" or "permanent" before you buy.
-
How often does a Wisp appear, and will rerolling give me a new one?
A Wisp turns up in every other shop, always in the rightmost slot. The rule counts shops, not rounds. So paying to refresh can turn up a new offer.
Rolling alone cannot buy you a second Wisp. You can buy one per round.
- A trait line puts a Wisp in every shop.
- Deeper in that trait line, you can buy more.
- A few Wisps only show in the first moments of planning.
Note: After stage 5, every other Wisp you are offered is a Combat one.
-
What decides which Wisps I am offered, and can I force a specific one?
You cannot choose your offer. It comes from the Wisps you qualify for right now.
That depends on:
- The stage. Stronger, pricier Wisps come later.
- Your gold. You only see Wisps you can afford.
- Your Tactician health. High-risk Wisps stop showing when it is low.
- A condition. Some need missing health first.
- Timing. A few only show early in planning.
After stage 5, every other offer is a Combat Wisp.
Note: Refreshing for a new offer spends gold you could bank.
-
Why did I get a Wisp that says none could be found and just gives gold?
It is the fallback offer. Its own text says the wilds could not find a Wisp for you on that roll. So it pays a small gold sum instead.
Your gold shapes this. The game only shows you Wisps you can afford, and few Wisps are free. So low gold shrinks the pool.
- Skipping it costs you nothing.
- The next Wisp shop draws a fresh offer.
Note: If you want a different offer, refresh to the next Wisp shop before you buy.
-
Are Wisps free? What does buying one really cost?
Mostly no. Most Wisps cost gold, and stronger ones later in the game cost more. A few cost nothing. Some risky ones take more, like selling your whole board.
The quiet cost is interest:
- You earn 1 gold per full 10 banked.
- Interest is capped at 5 gold a round.
- Dropping from 30 to 29 costs a gold every round until you climb back.
Note: Buy when the effect swings the fight or your board.
-
Can I skip a Wisp now, or lock the shop, and buy it later?
No. A Wisp can only be bought during the planning phase. When that phase ends, it is whisked away and the champion behind it is revealed.
- You cannot hold one for a later round.
- None can be bought during combat.
- A few only show in the first moments of planning.
Riot's rule names no exception for a locked shop.
Note: Decide inside that planning window.
-
Why do I keep seeing Combat Wisps late in the game?
It is a deliberate rule. After stage 5, every other Wisp you are offered is guaranteed to be a Combat one.
The rule counts Wisp offers, not rounds. Before that point, an offer can come from other categories. So a late roll could hand you gold or shop help when you needed board power.
Note: Riot added the guarantee because rolling late for a fight-winning buy felt too swingy. Saving gold still lets you be picky.
-
Can I tell which Wisp an opponent bought?
Yes, at least its kind. When a player buys a Wisp, its icon appears beside their Tactician health bar. Each category has its own colour and icon, so you can read it at a glance.
Scouting tells you what kind of help someone took:
- Combat power for the next fight.
- Gold or XP.
- A champion or an item.
Note: Riot designed the colours and icons to make scouting smoother.
